Can Canon 210XL or 211c ink cartridges be used in an Officejet Pro 6978 printer?

Assuming the printer was manufactured after December 1, 2016 , the printer does not support ink that lacks an HP chip.

Description:

Reminder: Dynamic security enabled printer. This Firmware includes dynamic security measures, which are used to block cartridges using a non-HP chip or modified or non-HP electronic circuitry. The printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip or circuitry. Periodic firmware updates will maintain the effectiveness of the dynamic security measures and block cartridges that previously worked. More at: www.hp.com/learn/ds

Note: For printers manufactured prior to December 1, 2016 dynamic security will not be enabled by this firmware. Please note that HP cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP cartridges.

NOTE:  This firmware update does not ADD new restrictions.  Every firmware update, including the very first version that was installed on the printer when it was brand new, re-enforces any policy that restricts the type of Ink cartridges used in the printer.

My unsolicited personal opinion: 

Don't do it, not even to an old printer.

Best to buy a Canon printer if you want to use Canon Ink.

Canon would like it if you purchased a Canon printer.  Smiling.
