Given:

  • A HP Envy 6455e inkjet printer connected as a WiFi printer.
  • I am currently in a location, (Russia), where it is literally impossible to get the "Genuine HP 67xl" print cartridges. ( I have ordered "Genuine HP" supplies here in the past and they have been either obvious counterfeits or repackaged junk)
  • As a consequence, it is necessary for me to attempt to refill my existing cartridges with the best and most suitable ink I can find.* (Note that I'd greatly prefer to use fresh, original, genuine HP supplies but I cannot get them here.)
  • Obviously the printer cannot know that I have refilled the cartridges, so it complains bitterly about the lack of ink.

Therefore, is there a way to:

  • Ask the printer to ignore the ink level?

-- or --

  • Reset the ink level on the cartridge?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Footnotes:

*  This was done by experimenting with various locally available "HP Compatible Ink" sources, ruining several print cartridges in the process.  I have discovered ink that appears to work, but I'd much prefer to use genuine HP supplies.  Unfortunately they are absolutely not available at the present time.

Follow-up question:

Several stores here sell HP "ink tank" printers and the corresponding bottles of raw ink.  Is it possible to use bottles of (hopefully), genuine HP ink instead of some strange 3rd party ink to refill my cartridges?  Which type would be most suitable?

Thanks!

Hi @jharris1993

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Disabling the "low ink" warning in the HP Smart app for your HP Envy 6455e printer can be done through the printer software settings. Here are the steps:

1. Access Printer Software

  • Open the HP printer software on your computer. This software is typically installed along with the printer driver.
  • If you don't have it installed, download it from the HP Support page.

2. Disable Notifications

  • In the printer software, look for an option called Printer Toolbox or Printer Preferences.
  • Navigate to the settings related to ink or cartridge notifications. This might be labeled as Supply Levels or Ink Levels.
  • Find the option to manage notifications or alerts and disable the "low ink" notifications. This might involve unchecking a box or selecting "Off" or "Disable."

3. Save Changes

  • After making the desired changes, save your settings. There may be a "Save" or "Apply" button at the bottom of the window.

4. Check Printer Control Panel

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to Settings > Preferences > Notifications.
  • Disable any ink-related notifications directly from the printer.

5. Use HP Smart App Settings

  • Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
  • Go to Settings > Notifications and turn off ink-related alerts.

With respect to the follow-up question:

HP ink bottles designed for HP Ink Tank or HP Smart Tank printers are not compatible with traditional ink cartridges like those used in your HP Envy 6455e. These ink bottles are formulated specifically for printers with built-in ink tanks and are not intended for refilling standard cartridges.

Using ink from these bottles to refill your cartridges could lead to issues such as:

Clogged Printheads: The viscosity and formulation of ink for tank systems differ from cartridge-based systems.

Inconsistent Print Quality: The ink may not interact properly with the cartridge's internal components.

Potential Printer Damage: Non-compatible ink could harm the printer's ink delivery system.

For your HP Envy 6455e, it's best to use HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges. If genuine HP cartridges are unavailable in your region, you might need to continue with your current approach of refilling cartridges carefully.

However, ensure the ink you use is specifically labeled as compatible with HP 67 cartridges to minimize risks

Is there any source for compatible HP inks that I can use? Perhaps from an online source? What would I search for?

I can get inks that appear to work, sort-of, but I'd really like to get the Good Stuff.

Sure, I'd be glad to assist you with that: Which cartridges work with my HP printer? | HP® Support

Purchase ink or toner cartridges

Replacement ink and toner is available from HP and local retailers.

Go to the HP Store.

Select your country/region and language.

Click Ink & toner at the top of the page.

Follow the instructions to find and order the cartridges for your printer.

Unfortunately Genuine HP supplies for my printer are not available for my printer. The best I can hope for is to try to find decent quality third-party supplies.

There are other HP printers for sale here, some of which are ink-tank printers.  I was hoping that one or more of these bulk-ink bottles would work with my printer as 3rd party ink is variable in its quality.  Supposedly this is not true.
