Coming to the end of my instant ink trial. Seeing horror stories that HP will stop the use of compatible ink in this printer and force the use of HP ink. Not sure I saw that in the advertising when I bought the printer 6 months ago!
Is this true - [edit] - I note my previous HP printer worked fine for 10 years on cheap, compatible ink before the machine broke, not the print head. Nothing ink related.
Simple answer pls, HP - can I use non HP ink?

Hi @hbcmike,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Using non-HP ink cartridges in your HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 printer may be possible, but it comes with some potential risks and drawbacks. HP printers are designed to work optimally with genuine HP ink cartridges, and using third-party or non-HP ink may lead to the following issues.
- Print Quality: Non-HP ink may not provide the same print quality as genuine HP ink. The colors may not be accurate, and you might experience issues like fading or smudging.
- Printer Warranty: Using non-HP ink cartridges could void your printer warranty. HP typically recommends using genuine HP supplies to ensure the best performance and to maintain the warranty coverage.
- Compatibility Issues: Non-HP ink cartridges might not be fully compatible with your printer. This could lead to problems such as cartridge recognition issues, error messages, or printer malfunctions.
- Printer Performance: Genuine HP ink is formulated to work seamlessly with HP printers, ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Non-HP ink may not provide the same reliability.
If you decide to use non-HP ink cartridges, be aware that you do so at your own risk. Make sure to carefully follow the instructions provided with the third-party cartridges, and be prepared for potential issues with print quality and printer functionality. Additionally, keep in mind that using non-HP ink might void your printer's warranty.
If print quality and long-term reliability are important to you, it's generally recommended to stick with genuine HP ink cartridges. If cost is a concern, you might explore options such as HP's XL cartridges or consider other ways to reduce printing costs, such as printing in draft mode or using recycled paper.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thx for this.
Has HP actively installed any software or firmware that would make cartridge recognition a problem? I hear of a class action in the US regarding this and see it reported in several different sources through 2023, sadly afetr I bought the printer.
You are saying that I can cancel instant ink, if i choose, and install 3rd party, non HP ink cartridges and the printer should work without undue warning messages or other hinderance?
