Hi @Jilopa_ezra,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 requires all four cartridges (black, cyan, magenta, and yellow) to be installed and contain ink for the printer to function, even if you're only printing in black and white. This is because the printer periodically uses color ink for maintenance tasks to keep the printhead in good condition.

However, here are a few suggestions.

  • Print in Black Only (With All Cartridges Installed): If the color cartridges are not empty but low, you can select the "Print in Grayscale" or "Black Ink Only" option in your printer settings. This reduces the use of color ink.
  • Use HP's Single-Cartridge Mode (If Supported): Some HP printers can operate in single-cartridge mode, which allows printing with just the black cartridge installed. Unfortunately, the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 does not support this feature, so you must have all cartridges installed.
  • Refill or Use Compatible Cartridges: If budget is a concern, consider refilling your cartridges or purchasing third-party compatible cartridges. Be cautious and choose a reputable brand to avoid quality or warranty issues.

Unfortunately, to keep the printer operational, you'll need at least minimal ink in all cartridges.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
