HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

My OfficeJet Pro 6978 no longer prints color correctly and HP Support advised there was no solution to correct this issue...and I needed to buy a new printer.

But, can I print with only the black ink cartridge installed and leave the color cartridges out? There is a warning on the screen to not power off the printer without cartridges installed. I have canceled my Instant Ink plan and now wondering if the printer is usable at all, or is it now a boat anchor?  If I can print black only without color cartridges installed, and occasionally use the copy and scanning functions,  I will keep it. Otherwise, it will be going to recycling

Not possible, you need to have all 4 ink cartridges for that printer model to work, if any ink cartridge is empty or missing the printer will not print.

Thank you for the response. Now I can get it recycled with a clear conscience that it is no longer functional.
