DeskJet 6127
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to print using only the black ink cartridge, which I have replaced with an IR ink cartridge, but when I print anything, instead of the printer only using the IR ink, the printing comes out a pinkish or coral color. The IR ink starts out as a very light cyan but fades away when dry. For some reason the printer is adding colored ink to the black characters. Any ideas? I've set the printer properties to "Black & White Only", doesn't seem to help.

The Deskjet 6127 will "underprint" black with magenta to make the quality better.  There are a couple things to try:

  • Change the print quality setting.  "Best" mode will underprint, "Draft" will not.  I do not know if "Normal" mode will underprint, you might try both.
  • If the print quality is not adequate in Draft mode then use an empty color cartridge.  If an empty cartridge is not available you could put scotch tape over the nozzles on the color cartridge.  Be aware that doing this will cause issues with the color cartridge - it will have color mixing that will be permanent if the tape is removed later,

Hi Bob, great suggestion, unfortunately it seems the under-printing occurs no matter what the setting, as I tried Draft and Normal with the same results. However, the scotch tape idea worked like a charm. Thanks for your suggestions!

Hi Paul - I am glad things are working for you.  I am surprised the Deskjet 6127 underprints in draft mode, but I have to admit it has probably been 20+ years since I had one and no doubt the drivers have evolved a bit over that time.
