I have an 8710 printer. I'm out of color ink. It used to let me print with non-hp cartridges, but that is now blocked. I could also choose black-only, but that seems to be blocked. Was this done in a firmware update? How can I print black only?

I am the bearer of news you will not want to hear.

It happens -- I am sorry for that.

All Ink cartridges used in the Printer must include an embedded HP chip.

The Dynamic Security that blocks the use of ink that does not have the HP chip is permanent.

-- Reminder for those reading --

Other companies use a different name for their ink protection system.

Next,

In general, the printer settings can be set up to use / prefer black ink for printing.

Unfortunately, the printer's on-board ink system was never designed to do what you want.

All cartridges -- both black and three colors -- must be installed and functional.

The all-cartridge limitation is not new -- the requirement is built into the hardware.

You can reduce the amount of color ink used for printing -- color ink must be available and functional.

In the past when I printed using greyscale in my computer the printer would pop up a message that said "do you want to print using black only" and it would continue even though one of the colors was empty. Until recently I also used Amazon special cartridges for less than half the cost of HP. Now neither of those options happen. No more HP for me if this is how they lock us down.

You are welcome.

I am sorry it is not the information you wanted.

Years ago I had an OfficeJet Pro 8740 -- it behaved as described in the documentation.

All the printer manufacturers build decent products.

I hope you are happy with your next printer.
