I've put in a cheaper cartridge as this was more available (the cyan one, others still have original HP ones). The cartridge protection is all showing as off both on the small LCD on the printer and via the online settings reached via the IP address on web browser, but the message displayed on the printer is "Protected Cartridges ... The indicated cartridges can only be used in the printer or fleet of printers that initially protected them using the cartridge protection feature. These cartridges must be replaced'. Have tried multiple versions of power off and unplug at wall to re-set and re-install etc but no joy. How to fix?

Ah - Interesting.

The "Cartridge Protection" myth has persisted for years.

I did not know that using a non-HP toner / ink cartridge would trigger that message.

Seems odd; perhaps it helps to explain the rumors.

---------------------

Continuing...

It is true that if Cartridge Protection is ever set against a set of ink / toner cartridges, that protection is permanent.  That means, that once enabled, Cartridge Protection cannot be disabled on the particular ink / toner cartridges that are marked as "fleet locked".

Still, from what I've read, Cartridge Protection is a different animal than the protection that prohibits non-HP ink.

According to the documentation --

Select printers, and I believe these are specifically Laser printers, include a setting called "Cartridge Policy".

Cartridge Policy governs whether the printer requires HP genuine ink.

-- Important --

  • Not all printers include a Cartridge Policy setting

AND

  • HP+ service, when enabled, permanently switches on the requirement for HP genuine ink.
