I just want to know how to get inside the printer to empty the excess ink that has accumulated in the ink well that captures the ink ejected when cleaning the print heads.   It is full and leaked when I move the printer to another desk.  Can the back panel be removed to access that "well" and remove the old ink - ie drain it out

Hi @Vailrider,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

I see that you are looking for information on how to remove the back panel on your Printer.

Kindly refer to the below image to remove the duplexer and that is the only part you will be able to remove from the back of the printer.

I know how to remove the duplexer - the only issue is how to get open access to the ink "tank" that fills when you do a clean print head maintenance.  I recently carried my HP 8600 to another room and it leaked ink all over a rug from that tank.  It is way back in the right corner and I wanted to be able to suction out whatever is in there to prevent this from happening again.

I did finally lay some paper towels on top and they soaked up some - but why does it fill up like that?

It appears the right side panel could be removed which may give access to what you need.  I would suggest getting a card table , cover with a large plastic sheet and work on that (probably in the garage...) as it is likely to be a  messy job.  You might take a look at the video here, at about 4:39 in.  I would certainly not turn the printer on its side, it will need to be kept upright in its normal orientation.  It would appear the side panel can be removed without disturbing the front or rear, I would start with that.
