HP Smart Tank 7005 All-in-One

I have been using a Smart tank 7005 for a week now. The printer is set to go into energy-saving mode after 5 minutes (default setting).

I was wondering if there is any harm in completely turning off the printer via a long press on the power button when I am not using it. I want to avoid clogging the printer heads.
Does the printer in sleep mode occasionally do something to prevent this clogging?

Hi @Guzmo,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Turning off your printer completely via a long press on the power button should not directly cause clogged printheads. However, leaving your printer off for extended periods can potentially contribute to clogging if the ink inside the printheads dries out.

Printers often perform maintenance routines, such as periodic printhead cleaning cycles, to prevent clogging, especially when they are in sleep mode. These maintenance routines help to keep the ink flowing and prevent clogs.

If your printer is set to go into energy-saving mode after 5 minutes, it's likely still performing some minimal maintenance tasks even when it's not actively printing. However, these tasks may not be as effective as when the printer is fully powered on.

To minimize the risk of clogged printheads, it's generally recommended to keep your printer on when you're using it regularly. If you know you won't be using the printer for an extended period, you can either leave it on with periodic usage or perform a proper shutdown procedure according to the manufacturer's instructions to ensure the printheads are capped and protected.

If you do choose to turn off your printer completely when not in use, just be aware that you may need to perform printhead cleaning or maintenance tasks more frequently to prevent clogs, especially if you leave it off for an extended period.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Alden,

First of all, thank you for the response. It is already becoming clearer to me but I still have a few questions.

You wrote 'these tasks may not be as effective as when the printer is fully powered on'.

I cannot always leave the printer fully on, after x number of minutes it goes into energy saving mode. This happens now after 5 minutes, and I can change it to 10 or 15 minutes but that is the maximum. Or do you mean something else?

I would like to know whether or not the printer in energy saving mode performs these maintenance tasks, 'it's likely' is not so concrete, I'm sorry..

My last question: a proper shutdown procedure, by that do you mean 'Transport the printer to a far destination or service location' on this web page https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_4512631-3975737-16 ? So disconnect the ink tubes?

Thanks for answering my questions.
