Cannot access printer cartridges to fix them

I just purchased the HP Office Jet Printer, 8025e

In the set up process, I installed the 4 cartridges. Now I'm receiving the following message:

"One or more cartridges are missing or damaged. Until cartridges are replaced, make sure printer is turned on to avoid damage to the printer." 

Yet when trying to fix the problem, I cannot get access to the cartridges. When I open the cover, the cartridges are all the way over to the right, inaccessible. It looks like the cartridges want to move to the left upon the cover opening, but are unable to do so. Are they obstructed? 

Please advise. I cannot fix a problem that I cannot access.
