Changed the ink cartridges. Printer automatically printed an alignment sheet. Sheet said if flashing A does not appear alignment has timed out and to use the app to restart alignment. But as mentioned I have none of the tool settings mentioned elsewhere. Now when I print I get lines across all he black and white areas. Coloured areas seem to be fine.

Welcome to the HP Community --
Everything I have known about EWS is now contorted into a new format on a new OfficeJet Pro 9135.
That said, the Embedded Web Server (EWS) for your printer should provide you access to your printer's Tools set.
In the Tools category, there should be the various tools, including those for Alignment.
The only checkpoint for which I cannot provide a solid answer is the precise path to those tools in your printer's EWS setup.
Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Examples - EWS > Utilities > Print Quality Toolbox

Example - EWS - Tools > Print Quality > Tools

EWS > HP Document / How-to
Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
NOTE: Find printer IP address

No need to apologize -- It does appear you have problems accessing the network features in EWS.

I know very little about the Mac version of HP Smart. I cannot tell you where to look in the app -- it appears that the app is not running on a device on the same network SSID as the printer. That said, the printer says it's OK -- ??
If the printer is not on the local network -- that is, if the printer is on a different network than the device where you are running the HP Smart application -- then sure -- the app won't know how to find the printer's details including any network information.

This happened right after my first ink cartridge change and the first time that I have tried to use the tools to clean up or realign the printer heads so perhaps I was never properly connected from the start even though I have been able to print. I have had to reconnect the printer to the network a few times in the last few months.
I think at this point I should get the system to forget my printer and start from scratch with the setup. Any suggestions on the best way to do this?

If the printer can be made to be on the network -- and stay connected -- other problems might dissipate.
I am hampered by not having any workable knowledge of MacOS --
I can provide some ideas that are not dependent on that Operating System.
What if?
If you cannot configure the printer on your network and convince the connection to stick,
You might be better served creating a new thread >> Ask for help to connect the printer to the network using your MacOS device.
The following checkpoints are not in order -- take a look at what makes sense for your current situation.
======================================
The printer and the device (computer / mobile device) must be on the same network.

Dual Band Network - Considerations
Reminders
Do not ignore your router --
A router that is weak, outdated, poorly located, or incorrectly configured can cause all sorts of odd network behavior issues.
If the printer supports it, connecting using Ethernet is generally a better choice.
Wireless
Some printers, particularly older models, only support Wireless at 2.4GHz
Some printers support Wireless at both 5GHz and 2.4GHz – but not at the same time
Regardless, if the printer won't work or cannot connect to your 5GHz SSID named network, connect to the 2.4GHz network.
If you are running a Dual Band Network,
Check that the router is set up to broadcast all frequencies it supports.
Next,
If your router supports it,
On your router:
Create a separate SSID named network for each frequency supported by the router
What? Create one SSID named network for 5GHz and one SSID named network for 2.4GHz
and
If your network configuration supports it,
Connect the printer to the SSID named network on the frequency / band you want it to use.
In general,
- 2.4GHz is less fussy about obstacles and supports a longer distance (separation) between router and device (printer)
- 5GHz is faster

Example – EWS – IPv4
EWS > HP Document / How-to
Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)
NOTE: Find printer IP address
Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation
Ethernet
Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Network > Wired (802.3) > IPv4 Configuration
Wireless
Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar
Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > IPv4 Configuration
As Available:
Tab Network > Wireless (802.11) > Advanced
Network Interface on / off, Network SSID name, Security Settings, Passphrase / Password
Select and connect to the correct SSID / network name for the bandwidth you are using.
Note: It is not mandatory that you use a manual / static IP address. Doing so can improve stability.

HP Smart for Mac
HP Smart – MacOS Desktop – Mac Apple Store
Compatibility
Mac OS Desktop
Requires macOS 11.0 or later.
If you have a supported iPhone / iOS, the following might be useful to illustrate what might be expected behavior.
(At least) when the printer is on the network and can be detected by the HP Smart application, the app's Settings > Advanced includes a "Hide Printer" option to remove the printer from the app.
