Hello!  I have a HP 5258.  I am receiving an error message that states that I have a cartridge problem and that it cannot communicate with the printer.  I have tried shutting down, powering off the printer.  I have tried cleaning both the cartridge and the printer connection surfaces.  I have tried replacing the cartridges, but I continue to receive the same error message.  Will you please assist?

Hi @edgeworthia,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you've already tried some essential troubleshooting steps for the cartridge communication error on your HP OfficeJet 5258. Let’s explore a few more steps to resolve this issue:

Additional Troubleshooting Steps:

Perform a Hard Reset:

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the back of the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 2 minutes.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall and the printer.
  • Turn the printer back on and see if the error persists.

Check for Firmware Updates: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Outdated firmware can cause cartridge communication issues. Check if your printer’s firmware is up to date.
  • You can check for updates through the HP Smart app or by visiting HP’s official website: HP printer setup (HP Smart app)
    • Go to HP Support, enter your printer model, and look for firmware updates.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts Again:

  • Turn the printer off and unplug it.
  • Remove the ink cartridges.
  • Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water.
  • Gently clean the gold contact points on the ink cartridges and the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
  • Allow them to dry for about 5 minutes before reinserting the cartridges.

Inspect the Cartridge and Printer Contacts for Damage:

  • Check if any of the contact points (on the cartridges or inside the printer) are bent, damaged, or dirty.
  • If you notice any damage, the cartridges or printer may need replacement or repair.

Use Genuine HP Cartridges:

  • Ensure that you are using genuine HP cartridges. Non-HP or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause communication issues.

Try a Different Cartridge:

  • Even new cartridges can occasionally be defective. If you have an extra set, try using those to see if the error message persists.

Reset the Printer’s Ink System:

  • Remove all ink cartridges from the printer.
  • Close the ink cartridge door and wait until the printer prompts you to insert the cartridges.
  • Reinstall the cartridges and check if the issue is resolved.

If the Issue Persists:

  • If none of these steps resolve the issue, there may be a hardware problem with the cartridge slot or the printer itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
