I keep getting a cartridge problem error that states remove and reinstall the indicated cartridge, making sure it is correctly installed. This pops up every time I try to print. I’ve tried cleaning the options, and the test print out afterwards is fine. When I do a standard test print with color, it works; however, with black ink, it doesn’t. Does this mean I need to buy new cartridges?

Hi @BBMoore817,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how  it must be to keep seeing that cartridge error when you’re just trying to print.

Could you please confirm whether the error message points specifically to the black cartridge?

Here are a few  steps you can try before replacing the cartridge:

Check cartridge seating: Open the access door and gently remove the black cartridge. Reinsert it firmly until it clicks into place.

Clean electrical contacts: Use a lint‑free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge . Let them dry completely before reinstalling.

Update printer firmware: firmware updates resolve recognition issues with cartridges.

Try another cartridge: If possible, test with a different black cartridge to see if the error persists.

If the test prints work fine in color but fail in black, it does suggest the black cartridge may be faulty or nearing end of life.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
