Hi @JJ19725,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you are receiving an error message indicating that the K (black) cartridge is damaged even after trying multiple new HP cartridges, it suggests that the issue may not be with the cartridges themselves but possibly with the printer's hardware or the contacts where the cartridge connects. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and potentially resolve this issue:

Step 1: Power Cycle the Printer

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for about 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Step 2: Inspect and Clean Cartridge Contacts

Remove the Black Cartridge:

  • Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access door.
  • Carefully remove the black cartridge.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge. These contacts are typically the small metal squares or rectangles.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely before reinserting the cartridge.

Clean the Printer Contacts:

  • Inside the printer where the cartridge sits, clean the corresponding contacts using the same method.

Reinsert the Cartridge:

  • After cleaning and ensuring the contacts are dry, reinsert the cartridge securely into the printer.

Step 3: Check for Firmware Updates

  1. Update Printer Firmware:
    • Visit the HP support website and download the latest firmware updates for your printer model.
    • Follow the instructions to update the printer's firmware, as this can sometimes resolve cartridge recognition issues.

Step 4: Reset the Printer

  1. Factory Reset:
    • Resetting the printer to factory defaults can sometimes resolve persistent errors.
    • Navigate to the printer’s settings menu (this process varies by model):
      • Go to Setup > Service > Restore Defaults.
      • Confirm the reset process and wait for the printer to restart.

Step 5: Try a Different Cartridge Batch

  1. Use a Different Batch of Cartridges:
    • If possible, try using a black cartridge from a different batch or purchase a new cartridge from a different retailer to rule out the possibility of a bad batch.

Step 6: Check for Physical Obstructions

  1. Inspect for Obstructions:
    • Carefully inspect the cartridge slot and surrounding area for any small pieces of paper, debris, or obstructions that might be interfering with the cartridge connection.

Step 7: Printer Self-Diagnostic

  1. Run Printer Diagnostics:
    • Many HP printers have built-in diagnostic tools. Access these tools through the printer’s control panel to run a diagnostic test that might identify the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
