HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus shows this screen: "One or more cartridges appear to be damaged. [C] Cyan   Remove them and replace with new cartridges"   I have done this numerous times (even bought new ones), as well as turn unit OFF and ON, as well as take out and check and clean everything on the printhead.   None of it works.  Same message keeps coming back.  Note: unit continues to work on other functions, i.e. Scanning thru HP Scan program on my computer.

Hi @Greeny11,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating that your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus keeps reporting a damaged cartridge error despite your efforts. Here are a few more troubleshooting steps you might try:

Reset the Printer: Apart from turning the printer off and on, a more complete reset might help:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about a minute before plugging it back in and turning it on.

Clean the Contacts: Since you’ve cleaned the printhead, also ensure that the electrical contacts in the cartridge slot and on the cartridge itself are clean:

  • Use a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol or water to gently wipe the copper-colored contacts. Be careful not to touch the contacts with your fingers.
  • After cleaning, let them dry completely before inserting the cartridge back into the printer.

Update Printer Firmware: Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve cartridge recognition issues. Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer:

  • You can do this by accessing the printer’s menu under 'Settings' or 'Tools', or by visiting the HP website and entering your printer model to find and download the latest firmware.

Check for Debris and Proper Installation: Make sure there is no debris or dust inside the cartridge carriage. Also, double-check if the cartridges are properly seated and installed in their respective slots.

Try an Old Cartridge: If you still have the old cartridges that didn’t cause an error, try reinserting one to see if the error persists. This can help determine if the issue is with the new cartridges or the printer itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Rachel,  thank you for your detailed response to my 8600 problem.   I had already tried all of the things you mentioned, but I went back and tried them all a few more times, even downloading and installing new firmware updates. Unfortunately none of it worked.   It would appear to be a glitch in either the machine software or a physical damage to the printhead.      So my choices basically would seem to boil down to:   1) do I take a chance on purchasing a new or used printhead if I can find one, for about 2/3 of what a new machine would cost;   or 2) do I give up and just purchase a new machine, I'm guessing one of the successor models like a 9125e or a 9135e  (I just last week bought a new box of cartridges too so that kinda pisses me off a little).  It's an "Oh, well".      Any thoughts?        OR, ..... do I use the opportunity to finally purchase a Large Format machine like the HP 7740 that can handle 11x17 (I'm a Landscape Architect so it would be helpful in my office at home).
