HP ENVY Photo 6230 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

This seems to be a recurring session on this forum
I have the dreaded 'Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP instant Ink message' - this then seems to disable all other functions on the screen

I suspect during a power cut my printer has disconnected from the router - no end of reboots have fixed that - but i cannot check !

So, in effect this means the printer cannot communicate with HP Instant Ink - and i cannot access the wifi controls to make sure it is connected

This is crazy functionality - WHY cannot i access the options and make sure the printer is connected - WHY does the message disable the whole printer function screen - whoever thought that was a good idea needs a good telling off

Yes i have tried all the reboot this unplug this from the Agents - in fact one agent gave me the same options then when said no that made no difference they stopped communicating with me

So anyone have any ideas HOW i can simply get to the options screens and make sure the printer is connected to the wifi when i have the 'Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP instant Ink' message displayed?

Otherwise this piece of junk is going in the bin and i'm buying a different make

Thanks for the solutions - none of those worked - mainly because they assume you can use the functions on the panel - which you cannot because of the error message

I managed to get the printer working though

For others that have the same problem, this is what i did - you will need a Laptop or PC with a USB printer cable - i did not have either so had to borrow one

1. Install the HP Smart app on the Laptop

2. Connect the printer using a USB cable (the crucial bit!)

3. Open the app and let if find the printer as a USB connected printer

4. Click on the Printer icon and under the settings find Hide printer

5. Hide the printer - accept the warning

6. Add a new printer

7. Select your printer

8. The app will go through a set up routine - which includes adding it to the Wireless network

9. Once done - add new printer again - this time select the one that appears as a wireless printer - you must do this otherwise you will just have a USB printer

10. You now have two printers installed one is USB and one is Wireless

11. The Cartridges errors should now be cleared as the printer is communicating with the HP network

12. Basically it's removing the printer and going through the set up on the PC that overrides the wireless set up on the printer panel

13. Remove the USB cable as you no longer need it (for now)

Alternatively  here is another fix

1. Remove the printer from it's location

2. Throw the printer in the bin

3. Unbox a new Canon printer

4. Set up and enjoy wireless printing again

Hi @John1458,

Thanks again for your reply and detailed workaround, it’s definitely appreciated! Since the printer panel is unresponsive due to the "Cartridge cannot be used until printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink" message, here are additional steps you can try

Use HP Smart on Mobile Device (iOS/Android)

Uninstall and Reinstall HP Smart App on your phone/tablet.

Open the app > Tap “Set Up a New Printer.”

Tap “Add Printer” and let it detect your device.

Once found, the app may prompt to complete setup via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Complete the setup—it may push firmware and restore connectivity.

Use Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If your printer was connected to Wi-Fi previously:

Find the printer’s IP address using the router’s admin panel (check connected devices).

Open a browser and enter: http://<Printer-IP> (example: http://192.168.1.105)

Access printer settings directly and verify:

Network > Wireless connection status

Web Services > Instant Ink status

Reset options if available

I hope this helps.
