Hi @Scrappycincinna,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY 7164 printer is not properly communicating with its cartridges, here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

Remove and Reinsert Cartridges:

  • Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center.
  • Carefully remove both cartridges from the carriage.
  • Check for any plastic tabs or tape on the contacts and remove them if they’re still there.
  • Reinsert the cartridges, making sure they’re properly seated.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water, gently clean the contacts on the cartridges as well as the contacts inside the carriage.
  • Let everything dry for a minute or two before reinserting the cartridges.

Restart the Printer:

  • After reinserting the cartridges, close the cartridge access door.
  • Plug the printer back in, turn it on, and see if the error persists.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Sometimes, firmware updates can improve communication issues. Visit the HP support page to check for any available firmware updates for your model.

Try New Cartridges:

  • If the issue continues, the cartridge itself could be faulty. If possible, try a new HP original cartridge to see if that resolves the problem.

Reset the Printer:

  • Unplug the printer while it’s on, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in. This soft reset can sometimes clear minor errors.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
