Our HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 All-in-One Printer died today. I plugged in a new HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e All-in-One Printer, but I have old 952 cartridges. I have two unused cartridges that the printer (in recent months) refused to accept. Then I have the four partially used cartridges that were in the printer when it died. Can any or all of those be returned to HP?

Hi @C4C1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know it’s a mixed feeling to say goodbye to a trusted OfficeJet Pro 8710 and unwrap a fresh OfficeJet Pro 9125e, only to stare at a stack of perfectly good 952 cartridges and wonder what to do next. Let’s make this easy and do right by both your wallet and the planet.

First things first: compatibility

  • Your 8710 used the HP 952/952XL family.
  • Your new 9125e uses the HP 936 / 936e (EvoMore/XL) family, not 952.

Bottom line: the 952 cartridges (even if unopened) won’t fit or work in the 9125e. You’ll want 936/936e for this printer.

What you can do with your 952 cartridges

1) If they’re unopened and recently purchased

Try returning them to the original retailer (proof of purchase helps). HP Planet Partners is a recycling program (not a refunds program), and HP states it does not offer a return program for unused cartridges; refunds must go through the seller’s policy.

2) If they’re opened or partially used

Recycle them for free through HP Planet Partners. You can print a prepaid label or request a postage‑paid envelope/box and drop them at UPS (US examples shown):

  • Program overview and free labels: Product Return and Recycling | HP® Official Site Ink & Toner Recycling
  • US packaging/label instructions (ink/toner): HP Planet Partners guide (UPS drop‑off, mail‑back).
  • If you lost the envelope/label, you can order/print another one here.

HP Planet Partners accepts original HP cartridges for recycling; non‑HP, refilled, or remanufactured supplies are not eligible.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
