Hi, I've been using these HP cartridges for years, suddenly the black and white cartridge has started giving the incompatible error. The same cartridge has been working fine since it was installed but I can't figure out why is it showing a problem suddenly and what can I do about it. Please advise. Thank you

Hi @Dp132,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When encountering an "incompatible cartridge" error with your HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 3545 printer, there are several troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve the issue:
- Restart the Printer: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, and then plug it back in and turn it on again.
- Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that the black and white cartridge is properly installed in its respective slot. Remove the cartridge and reinsert it firmly to ensure proper connection.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: Over time, the contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer may accumulate dust or debris, causing connectivity issues. Gently wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water. Similarly, clean the contacts inside the cartridge slot in the printer.
- Update Printer Firmware: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date. Manufacturers often release firmware updates to address compatibility issues and improve performance.
- Check Cartridge Compatibility: Although you've been using the cartridges for years, there may have been changes or updates that affect compatibility. Verify that the cartridges you are using are compatible with your printer model.
- Reset the Printer: Perform a reset on your printer to clear any temporary errors. Refer to your printer's user manual or HP's support website for instructions on how to perform a reset specific to your printer model.
- Replace Cartridge: If none of the above steps resolve the issue, consider replacing the black and white cartridge with a new one. Sometimes, cartridges can become damaged or reach the end of their usable life, leading to compatibility issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi @Gaya1239,
Thank you for your detailed response.
I tried each of these, except the reset, but still facing the same issue.
Interestingly, the printer is accepting the colored-ink cartridge that I bought together with the b&w.
I'm not sure buying a new cartridge is a solution because how do we guarantee the same issue will not show up with the new one?
