Another unfortunate HP printer cartridge story, after 3 hours of efforts. On a positive note my Envy7645 worked well for about 7 years, then suddenly it's "low on ink" after 20 pages of regular text. After going through all protocols suggested by HP and 6 cycles of self-cleaning, and two HP brand 62 cartridges, I finally got in touch with tech support only to learn that there's none because my printer is no longer covered by warranty so the only offer is to purchase help from HP at $90/hour. Sad commentary on a company that essentially won't make any attempt to stand behind a product unless they're contractually bound to do so.

Hi @GaryXC,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand that your HP Envy 7645, which worked well for years, is now showing “low ink” and refusing to print after just 20 pages, despite using genuine HP 62 cartridges and running multiple cleaning cycles.

Even though your printer is no longer under warranty, there are still some steps you can try to get it printing again:

Steps to try:

Reset the Printer

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power outlet.

Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Sometimes a full reset can clear false “low ink” messages.

Clean Cartridge Contacts

Remove the cartridge and gently wipe the gold contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts in the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water.

Reinsert the cartridge and test printing.

Try a Different Cartridge

If you have a spare HP 62 cartridge, try swapping it in to rule out a defective cartridge.

Run Printer Maintenance Tools

From the printer control panel or HP Smart app, run:

Printhead Cleaning (full/advanced)

Print Quality Diagnostic/Test Page

Update Firmware

Go to HP Software & Drivers and ensure the latest printer firmware is installed.

Updated firmware can sometimes fix cartridge recognition issues.

Bypass Low Ink Messages (Optional)

Some HP printers allow “Continue Printing” despite low ink warnings. Check if this option is available on your printer’s screen.

I hope this helps.
