HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer

Printer suddenly stopped printing with screen message that says:

"The indicated cartridges have been blocked by the printer firmware because they contain a non-HP..."

This message seems to be in error!

The printer has the original color HP cartridges when I purchased printer.  I have replaced the black HP cartridge with another HP black cartridge.

Hi @Tahoedar

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for explaining the situation so clearly. It’s incredibly frustrating when a printer misidentifies genuine cartridges—especially when you’ve taken care to use original HP supplies.

Let’s work through this together and get your printer back on track.

Steps to Resolve Firmware Blocking Genuine HP Cartridges

1. Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall and the rear of the printer.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power the printer back on and check if the error clears.

2. Check for Firmware Updates

Sometimes a newer firmware version corrects misidentification issues:

  • Visit the HP OfficeJet firmware page
  • Enter your printer model and download the latest firmware.
  • Install it using USB or HP Smart if the printer is responsive.

3. Reinstall Cartridges One by One

  • Remove all cartridges.
  • Power off the printer and unplug it.
  • Wait 2 minutes, then plug it back in and power on.
  • Reinstall cartridges one at a time, starting with the original color cartridges.
  • Observe whether the error reappears after inserting each one.

4. Use HP Smart Diagnostic Tools

If the printer is connected to your PC or mobile device:

  • Open the HP Smart app
  • Run the diagnostics and troubleshooting tool to detect cartridge recognition issues.

I truly regret the disruption this has caused—especially when you’ve done everything right by using original cartridges.

Let me know how far you get with these steps, and I’ll guide you further if needed.
