Hi,
Similar to so many other posts, I have an HP Office Jet Pro 7720 ( all-in-one ) which was working perfectly until recently when it stated showing a message "Indicated cartridges blocked for containing a non-HP chip".
I also have cartridge protection turned off so there is no reason why this should have happened.
I noticed that there were many with the same printer experiencing the same issue which suggests that there was a glitch in on of the firmware updates. Is there a way to get HP to review and fix this?
This is not OK as previously I have used non HP cartridges and managed to continue printing.

Hi @Isacab,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds frustrating to encounter this issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 printer. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem.
- Restart the Printer: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Turn off your printer, wait for about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.
- Check Cartridge Installation: Ensure that all cartridges are properly installed and securely seated in their slots.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Remove the cartridges carefully and clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridges and inside the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water. Allow them to dry completely before reinserting.
- Update Printer Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Firmware updates sometimes include bug fixes that can resolve issues with cartridge recognition.
- Reset the Printer: You can perform a semi-full reset on the printer, which may help resolve persistent issues. Note that this will reset some settings, so you may need to reconfigure them after reset.
Regarding your concern about firmware updates causing issues with non-HP cartridges, it's possible that a recent update may have implemented stricter cartridge authentication measures. HP periodically updates firmware to improve printer performance and security, but this can sometimes impact the use of non-HP cartridges.
I hope this helps resolve the issue with your printer!
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
