Hi @Morgs135,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are encountering issues with your HP OfficeJet 5230 printer cartridges not communicating with the printer, here are some troubleshooting steps you can follow:
- Ensure Proper Installation: Double-check that you've properly installed the cartridges into the printer. Make sure they are securely inserted into the correct slots.
- Check for Protective Tape: Many cartridges come with protective tape covering the electrical contacts. Ensure that you've removed any protective tape or seals from the cartridges before installing them.
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: Sometimes, the electrical contacts on the cartridge or inside the printer may be dirty or obstructed. Gently clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer using a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with distilled water. Be careful not to touch the nozzles or copper-colored contacts.
- Restart Printer: Turn off your printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 1-2 minutes. Then, plug it back in and power it on. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve communication issues.
- Update Printer Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Sometimes, outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues with new cartridges. You can usually find firmware updates on the HP support website. Software and Drivers for HP OfficeJet 5230 All-in-One Printer
- Try Different Cartridges: If you have access to another set of cartridges, try installing them to see if the issue persists. This will help determine if the problem lies with the cartridges themselves.
- Reset Printer: If none of the above steps work, you can try resetting your printer to its factory defaults. Refer to your printer's manual or HP's support website for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
