I have an old HP PhotoSmart C4280 Printer/Scanner that works really great! But I am having trouble finding genuine HP brand ink cartridges for this model (Black #74 and Colour #75). I finally purchased off-brand 'Lumson' ink cartridges (74XL and 75XL) off of Amazon. Will these cartridge work with this HP C4280 Printer? The cartridges are supposedly for this model of printer but I've reading that non-HP brand cartridges do not always work in an HP printer. How are we suppose to know which cartridges will or won't work?
Many thanks...

Hi @FlatHead239,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding using non-HP ink cartridges in the HP Photosmart C4280 printer!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The HP Photosmart C4280 printer uses the Black HP #74 and Color HP #75 ink cartridges. While third-party cartridges, like the ones from Lumson, may state compatibility with your printer model, it's important to note that non-genuine HP cartridges may not always work well or reliably in HP printers. Here are a few considerations:
Compatibility Issues: Non-HP cartridges can sometimes lead to compatibility problems, such as recognition issues where the printer does not identify the cartridges correctly.
Print Quality and Reliability: Genuine HP ink cartridges are specifically designed for HP printers to ensure optimal print quality and reliability. Using non-HP cartridges might lead to lesser print quality or inconsistent results.
Warranty and Support: If you use non-HP cartridges, it might affect your printer’s warranty or the support services provided by HP, as they cannot guarantee the performance and reliability of non-HP products.
Error Messages: Non-HP ink cartridges might prompt error messages related to ink cartridges on your printer.
Cartridge and Printhead Damage: There is a risk of potential damage to the printhead or cartridges when using refilled, remanufactured, or off-brand cartridges.
I hope this helps.

On a side note, I use this printer rarely so I remove the cartridges and store them after each use. I found this as a good way of keeping them from drying out...
How to keep inkjet cartridges from drying out when printer not used.
