Hi @jimrg1213,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
If you're encountering an "Attention Required" error on your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183 after changing cartridges, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check Cartridge Installation:
- Ensure Proper Installation: Open the printer’s front cover and make sure that the cartridges are properly installed. Remove and reinsert each cartridge to ensure they are seated correctly.
- Verify Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridges are compatible with the HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M183. Cartridges that are not specifically designed for your model may cause issues.
2. Inspect the Cartridges:
- Check for Protective Tape: Ensure that all protective tape or seals have been removed from the cartridges before installation.
- Examine the Chips: If the cartridges have chips, make sure they are properly installed and aligned.
3. Restart the Printer:
- Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, wait for a minute, and then turn it back on. This can sometimes resolve temporary issues.
4. Check for Error Messages or Lights:
- Refer to the Printer Display: Look for any specific error messages or warning lights on the printer’s display panel. Consult the user manual for details on what these indicators mean.
5. Update Printer Firmware:
- Visit HP Support: Go to the HP Support website and check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues with new cartridges.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @jimrg1213,
Please find the remaining steps below
6. Clean Contacts:
- Clean Cartridge Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth or a soft brush to gently clean the contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer where the cartridges make contact. Avoid touching the toner drum or cartridge chips directly.
7. Reset the Printer:
- Factory Reset: If the above steps don’t work, consider performing a factory reset. Refer to the printer’s manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.
8. Check Printer Software:
- Reinstall Printer Software: Uninstall and reinstall the printer software on your computer. This can help resolve any software conflicts or settings issues.
9. Verify Cartridge Authenticity:
- Check for Genuine Cartridges: Sometimes third-party cartridges can cause issues. Verify that the cartridges you purchased are genuine HP cartridges or from a reputable supplier. HP’s website or customer service can help you determine if the cartridges are genuine.
If the problem persists after trying these steps, contacting HP Phone Support would be the next best step, especially if the printer is still under warranty. Let me know if you need further assistance!
