I have an HP Pro 8020/830.  Printer said I didn't need to change the color cartridges but I checked everything I could find on line but nothing worked.   Everything printed in black.  Finally 2 hours later it said to change the colors.  So I did.  Still everything is printed in black.  It doesn't have any settings I can find to do printer maintenance, or a setup menu to check ink cartridges  except for the pop up that came up to change the colored cartridges.  Can't find anything wrong on computer setting for color.  Help if you can.

Hi @Glendale51,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Here are some steps to troubleshoot your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020e All-in-One Printer and resolve the issue of not printing in color.

Check Printer Settings:

From the Printer Panel:

  • Navigate to the Settings or Tools menu on the printer touchscreen.
  • Look for Maintenance or Printer Reports options. If available, print a test page or quality diagnostic page to check if colors appear correctly.

From the HP Smart App (on your computer or mobile):

  • Open the HP Smart app.
  • Go to Printer Settings or Advanced Settings.
  • Ensure that Color Printing is enabled.

On Your Computer:

  • Go to Devices and Printers or Printers & Scanners in the system settings.
  • Right-click your HP printer, then select Printing Preferences.
  • Under the Color or Paper/Quality tab, ensure Color is selected and not Grayscale or Black & White.

Check Ink Cartridges:

  • Remove and reinstall all cartridges to ensure they are seated correctly.
  • Make sure the cartridges are genuine HP cartridges and not empty.
  • Clean the contacts on the cartridges with a lint-free cloth.
  • Run an Ink Cartridge Cleaning cycle from the printer or HP Smart app if available.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date:
    • Use the HP Smart app or visit HP's support website to check for firmware updates.

Print a Diagnostic Page:

  • Use the HP Smart app or printer control panel to print a diagnostic or status report.
  • Check if colors are being used on the report. If not, the problem could be with the cartridges or printhead.

Perform a Printhead Cleaning:

If the colors still don’t print, cleaning the printhead may resolve the issue:

  • Access the printhead cleaning option via the HP Smart app or the printer’s Tools menu.

Check Printhead Alignment:

  • If the printhead is misaligned, color printing may be affected.
  • Look for the Align Printhead option in the Maintenance or Tools menu.

Reset the Printer:

Perform a hard reset on the printer:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Disconnect the power cord for 60 seconds.
  3. Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.

Test With Another Device:

  • Try printing a color document from another computer, phone, or tablet to rule out software or driver issues.

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

If the problem persists, uninstall and reinstall the printer drivers:

  • Download the latest drivers for your printer from HP's website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
