I just installed new color cartridges in my printer, they are HP 910 color cartridges.  I am getting the message that the Magenta cartridge chip is not compatible with my printer.  The Cyan and Yellow cartridge are from the same package and are just fine.  When I put the old Magenta cartridge back in the message goes away and the printer works fine.  I need a new cartridge and don't want to pay for the cartridges again.

Hi @Lana1950,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this is. You’ve just installed fresh HP 910 color cartridges, expecting vibrant prints, and now the printer is flashing an error about the Magenta cartridge chip. It feels unfair when Cyan and Yellow from the same pack work perfectly, yet Magenta is singled out.

Here’s the guidance to resolve this:

Why This Happens

HP cartridges have a tiny chip that communicates with the printer. If the chip is:

  • Dirty or misaligned
  • Damaged during packaging or shipping
  • Or if the printer firmware cannot read it correctly
…you’ll see “chip not compatible” or “cartridge faulty.”

Steps to Fix It

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

2. Remove and Inspect the Magenta Cartridge

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Take out the Magenta cartridge.
  • Check for:
    • Protective tape still on the ink nozzle or chip (remove if present).
    • Dirt or fingerprints on the gold contacts.

3. Clean the Cartridge Chip

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Gently wipe the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer.
  • Let them dry for 5 minutes.

4. Reinstall the Cartridge

  • Insert the Magenta cartridge firmly until it clicks.
  • Close the access door.

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to Official HP® Support and enter your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
