I am using the HP original cartridges that shipped with the printer, and the printer keeps generating an error saying the cartridge is "incompatible." A hard power down and reset will resolve the error for a little while, but then the error will come back. Is the printer just defective?

I understand that you are getting cartridge error, I am glad to assist you.
Examine the toner cartridge area
Open the toner cartridge access door, and then make sure the toner cartridges are installed correctly. Remove the toner cartridges, and then slide them back into their slots until they are firmly seated.
Update the printer firmware to install the latest updates
