Hello!
My printer will not print magenta toner. I have replaced the cartridge and the pins appear to be fine. I’ve tried to run the clean and calibration function with no luck. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

@cicelyclaire, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw is not printing magenta even after replacing the cartridge and running cleaning/calibration, here are some steps to help resolve the issue:
Check Cartridge Authenticity
Make sure the magenta toner cartridge is genuine HP. Non-HP or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause print quality issues.
- You can verify your cartridge here: HP anti-counterfeit | HP® Official Site
Inspect the Cartridge and Contacts
- Remove the magenta cartridge.
- Gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a lint-free cloth.
- Reinsert the cartridge firmly.
Print Quality Diagnostic Page
This helps identify if magenta is missing from the print system.
- On the printer control panel, go to:
- Setup > Reports > Print Quality Report
- Check if the magenta blocks or text are missing or faded.
Run Cleaning and Calibration Again
Sometimes multiple runs are needed.
- Go to Setup > Service > Cleaning Page
- Then go to Setup > System Setup > Print Quality > Calibrate Color
Check for Firmware Updates
Outdated firmware can cause printing issues.
- Visit: Official HP® Support
- Enter your printer model and install the latest firmware.
Try a Different Magenta Cartridge
Even new cartridges can be defective. If possible, try another magenta cartridge to rule this out.
Check the Imaging Drum
The imaging drum (if separate from the toner) might be damaged or worn out. If magenta is consistently missing, the magenta developer in the drum could be the issue.
Reset the Printer
Sometimes a full reset can help clear internal errors.
- Unplug the printer while it's on.
- Wait 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and power it on.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
