Color carts

I have an envy 7858 printer and just replaced the color cartridge.  My settings indicate that the cart is half full.  Yet I have not printed anything in color.  I only use the black.  Why is the color being used for black printing.

The color cartridge usage in HP ENVY Photo 7858 All-in-One Printer can occur even when you print primarily using the black ink cartridge. There are several reasons for this:

Printer Maintenance: HP inkjet printers, including the ENVY series, routinely perform maintenance tasks such as printhead cleaning to ensure the printer functions properly. This maintenance can use a small amount of color ink.

Printhead Design: Some printers combine ink from the color and black cartridges to maintain the health of the printhead and prevent clogs. This means that even if you select black and white printing, color ink might still be used.

Document Properties: Sometimes a document may include elements a printer interprets as color even if they appear to be black and white. Checking the document settings or exporting it as a purely monochrome file might help reduce color ink usage.
