Printing today, working fine with adequate ink levels. All of a sudden get a color ink cartridge error. Removed and cleaned, no change. Did a soft and hard reset (10 minutes no power), no change. Installed new non-hp color cartridge like the one it replaced, no change. Has my printer died?

@Cirreus, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand how frustrating it can be when your printer suddenly stops recognizing a cartridge, especially after trying multiple resets and replacements. Let's walk through some steps to help resolve this issue.
Verify Cartridge Compatibility
Ensure the cartridge you're using is compatible with the HP ENVY 7640. This printer uses HP 62 or HP 62XL ink cartridges. If you're using a third-party or refilled cartridge, it may not be recognized correctly.

Clean the Cartridge and Contacts
Even if you've already cleaned the cartridge, try this method:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Remove the color cartridge.
- Gently clean the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
- Let everything dry for 5 minutes before reinserting.
Reset the Printer (Hard Reset)
You mentioned trying this, but just to confirm:
- With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back.
- Unplug from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
Try a Genuine HP Cartridge
If you're using a non-HP cartridge, try installing a genuine HP cartridge. HP printers often reject third-party cartridges due to firmware updates or chip recognition issues.
Firmware Update
Sometimes, updating the printer firmware can resolve recognition issues:
- Download the HP Smart app on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect your printer and check for firmware updates.
If none of the above steps work, your printer may need service, in that case, we suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
