HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi, recently, my printer stopped using my color ink when I try to print something in color. There is color ink in my cartridge, over half full. I select my option to print in color and it still does black and white. Does anyone have any guidance?

Hi @mrs_stewie,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer is only printing in black and white, even though the color cartridge is over half full. Let's try to fix this and get the printer back on working:

1. Check Print Settings

  • When printing, click “Printer Properties” or “Preferences” in the print dialog.
  • Make sure:
    • Color is selected (not grayscale or black & white).
    • Print in grayscale is unchecked.

2. Run the HP Smart App

This tool can detect and fix common printing issues: 👉 HP Smart - Free download and install on Windows | Microsoft Store

3. Clean the Printhead

  • Open the HP Smart app or printer control panel.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead.
  • Run the cleaning cycle and print a test page.

4. Check Ink Levels in HP Smart App

  • Open the HP Smart app on your PC or phone.
  • Confirm that the color cartridge is recognized and not flagged as empty or incompatible.

5. Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver

6. Try a Different App

Try printing from another app (e.g., Word, browser, or PDF viewer) to rule out app-specific issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
