HP ENVY 6455e All-in-One Printer

I was having trouble printing and my HP app on my phone said to replace the cartridge with another HP cartridge or just pull the color cartridge out. So I removed the color cartridge and then was able to print in black-and-white. I have now put in an HP instant ink cartridge back on, but it is still not printing in color and I have no options on my MacBook Pro  macOS Sonoma version 14.6.1 to select a color print option

Hi @ABPRussell,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP ENVY 6455e All-in-One Printer is having trouble recognizing or using the color cartridge, even after replacing it with an Instant Ink cartridge. Here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the issue.

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure the new color cartridge is correctly installed. Make sure it clicks into place and the protective tape is fully removed.

Verify Ink Levels:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your phone or the HP Printer Assistant on your Mac to check the ink levels. Ensure that both the color and black ink cartridges have sufficient ink. If the color cartridge is showing as empty or low, the printer may not allow color printing.

Reset Printer:

  • Turn off your printer, wait for 30 seconds, and turn it back on. This can sometimes help reset the printer’s recognition of the cartridges.

Check Print Settings on Mac:

  • When you go to print, make sure the print settings aren’t set to black-and-white by default. In the print dialog box on your MacBook, click on the “Show Details” button to access more options. Check that color printing is selected (instead of grayscale or black and white).

Update Printer Firmware and Software:

  • Make sure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or on the HP website.
  • Also, ensure that your HP printer software on your MacBook is updated. If needed, you can reinstall the latest drivers from the HP support website.

Run Printer Troubleshooter (if available):

  • On your Mac, you can try running the built-in troubleshooting tool. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your HP ENVY 6455e printer, and click "Open Print Queue." If there’s an option for troubleshooting or diagnostics, use it to check for any printer errors or warnings.

Print a Test Page:

  • You can print a color test page directly from the printer’s menu. This will help you determine if the printer is able to print in color at all.

If these steps don't resolve the issue, there may be an issue with the cartridge itself or with the printer's internal settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
