I have some streaking and running that happens on about 30% of my print jobs. I have had it serviced by a LaserJet printer company who can't seem to figure out what is causing this. It doesn't seem to have a trend that I can tell - it varies between colors. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you

Hi @Kathleen_R,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Dealing with color streaking or running issues in laser printers can be quite challenging. Here are some potential causes and solutions to address the problem:

1. Check and Replace Toner Cartridges

  • Ensure you are using high-quality, genuine toner cartridges. Sometimes, aftermarket or refilled cartridges can cause print quality issues.
  • Check the toner cartridges for any signs of damage or leakage.
  • Remove and reinstall the toner cartridges to ensure they are seated correctly.
  • If you suspect a cartridge is causing the issue, try replacing it with a new one.

2. Clean the Printer Components

  • The imaging drum can sometimes collect toner residue, causing streaks. Carefully remove it and clean it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth to gently wipe down the interior of the printer, especially the areas around the toner cartridges and imaging drum.
  • The fuser assembly heats and bonds the toner to the paper. If it’s dirty or malfunctioning, it can cause streaks. Check if there is any toner buildup or residue and clean it carefully.

3. Check Paper Quality and Type

Use Recommended Paper:

  • Ensure you are using the recommended type and quality of paper for your printer. Low-quality or incorrect paper can cause streaking and other print quality issues.

Check Paper Loading:

  • Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in the paper tray. Misaligned paper can lead to uneven printing.

4. Perform Printer Maintenance and Calibration

  • Many laser printers have a built-in calibration process to adjust color alignment and improve print quality. Consult your printer’s manual or settings menu for the calibration option.
  • Use the printer’s built-in cleaning cycle to clean the print heads and other internal components. This can sometimes resolve streaking issues.

5. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for Firmware Updates:
    • Visit the HP website to see if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Updating the firmware can sometimes resolve persistent print quality issues.

6. Check for Paper Path Issues

  • Check for any obstructions or issues along the paper path that could cause the toner to be applied unevenly.
  • Ensure there are no paper jams or debris inside the printer that might be affecting the print quality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
