Deskjet ink advantage 5275.

With an almost new colour cartridge I'm now getting an error:

"The indicated cartridges are not communicating correctly with the printer."

The cartridge in question is the colour cartridge.

I have installed it some time before and was printing flawlessly.

Today I went to print and the error message came up.

I cleaned the contacts on the printer and on the cartridge.

I got 1 print. But on the next printing, the messages popped up again.

Removing the colour cartridge I can still print with the black cartridge only.

Hi @Coral5,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating this is, especially when the cartridge worked fine before and suddenly throws a communication error. This issue usually points to either:

  • Dirty or oxidized electrical contacts (even after cleaning, residue can remain)
  • Cartridge chip failure
  • Printer carriage or flex cable issue

Here’s what you can do:

Step 1: Power Reset

  1. Turn the printer OFF.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back and the wall outlet.
  3. Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Step 2: Deep Clean Contacts

  • Remove the color cartridge.
  • Clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer with:
    • A lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Let dry for 5 minutes, then reinstall firmly.

Step 3: Update Firmware

Sometimes, firmware updates fix chip recognition issues: 👉 HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 5275 All-in-One Printer | HP® Support

Step 4: Test in Single-Cartridge Mode

You already confirmed that black works alone. If color fails even after cleaning, the cartridge chip may be defective.

Step 5: Replace Cartridge (Last Resort)

If the error persists, the color cartridge is likely faulty, even if it’s new. HP cartridges have embedded chips that can fail unexpectedly.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Spoiler

Hello @VikramTheGreat

I had already tried all you have suggested with the exception of updating the firmware, since there is no update newer than what I already have installed.

The only thing which have fixed the issue is changing the faulty colour cartridge which has been still almost full and only used for a couple of 6x4 prints.

I can't imagine what have could gone wrong since this is the first time it happened to me in almost 4 years of using the printer every now and then, not constant use.

I hope it doesn't happen again since HP cartridges are not so cheap.

Anyway,  Thanks for you responce. And a Merry festive season to you and yours.

Hi @Coral5,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share the update. I’m really glad to hear that you were able to identify the root cause and that replacing the faulty color cartridge resolved the issue.

We understand your concern, especially when a cartridge is relatively new and still has ink remaining. While it’s uncommon, a cartridge can occasionally develop an internal fault or contact issue that may affect printer operation, even with light or infrequent use. We truly appreciate your patience and your long-term use of HP products.

Your feedback is valuable, and rest assured, it will be shared with the appropriate team. We sincerely hope you don’t experience this again and that your printer continues to work smoothly going forward.

Thank you once again for your kind message. Wishing you and your loved ones a very happy festive season as well. 🎄

Take care and have an amazing day!
