Hello everyone,

I would like to address owners of HP Officejet Pro 7720, 7730 and 7740 printers. Can you still use compatible cartridges or cartridges that you can refill yourself because I plan to buy a 7740 printer and I find the cartridges too expensive for what they are.

There are a lot of videos and negative opinions on the strategy implemented by HP on cartridges of other brands with the famous software (or firmware) update.

If anyone is having problems, have you found a solution?

Thank you.

Hi @Citadin62,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There are still ways to use compatible cartridges or refilled cartridges with HP printers. Here are a few potential solutions:

  • Disable Automatic Updates: You can disable automatic firmware updates on your HP printer. This can prevent the printer from receiving updates that may block non-HP cartridges. However, keep in mind that disabling updates may also prevent your printer from receiving important security patches and feature enhancements.
  • Use Cartridge Chip Resetters: Some third-party companies offer cartridge chip resetters that can reset the chip on compatible cartridges, making them usable again after a firmware update has blocked them.
  • Purchase from Reputable Suppliers: Look for compatible cartridges or refilled cartridges from reputable suppliers who are known for producing high-quality products that are less likely to be blocked by firmware updates.
  • Consider Ink Subscription Services: HP offers ink subscription services where you pay a monthly fee for a certain number of pages. This can help reduce the cost of original HP cartridges, as they are often included in the subscription.

It's essential to weigh the cost savings of using third-party or refilled cartridges against the potential inconvenience of dealing with firmware updates and compatibility issues. Additionally, keep in mind that using non-HP cartridges may void your printer's warranty, so proceed with caution.

Lastly, before making a purchase, consider researching the current state of firmware updates and compatibility for the specific model of HP printer you plan to buy.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
