Welcome to the HP English Community --
HP won't fix your ten-year-plus old printer.
What?
HP Support fixes new printers that are still in-Warranty and have suffered a failure covered by that Warranty.
If the printer cannot be made to work better with the onboard tools to improve print quality, then, true - the printer might be close to failure.

What if?
If you can find an old-printer tech in your area who can find the parts and is willing to try the repair, do that.
You need someone willing to work on an old printer, not an old tech willing to fix a printer.
Do ask first about the cost - the printer might be worth about $12 dollars - keep that in mind when considering having the hardware repaired.
Good Luck.
