My printer just started to have trouble with cyan color printing.  I have Instant Ink service and have installed all new cartridges.  I have cleaned heads and printed align sheet but,  the cyan is streaked and will not scan for alignment.  I have done a reset as instructed by virtual assistant.  Has anyone had this issue before and what can I do to correct this?  Printer in now out of extended warranty as of 2026,  it is 7 years old and had normal use.

Hi @Burbanker,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I’m really sorry you’re dealing with streaked cyan prints. It can be incredibly frustrating when everything seems new and still won’t work properly. Here's what I recommend to fix this issue:

Troubleshooting Steps for Cyan Streaks

1. Verify Cartridge Authenticity

Ensure your cyan cartridge is a genuine HP Instant Ink cartridge. Counterfeits or refills often cause poor ink flow.

2. Run Multiple Print-head Cleanings

Even if you’ve already cleaned once, go through the Printhead Cleaning utility up to three times, checking the Print Quality Diagnostic Page after each attempt:

  • On the printer, go to: SetupPrinter MaintenanceClean Printhead.

3. Review the Print Quality Report

Identify whether cyan is completely missing, faint, or streaked. This report helps determine if it’s a cartridge or printhead issue.

4. Manual Printhead Cleaning (If Comfortable)

Only proceed if you're confident handling printer parts:

  1. Turn the printer off and remove cartridges.
  2. Gently blot the printhead (the section where ink dispenses) with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.
  3. Let dry for ~10 minutes, reinstall cartridges, then test a print.

5. Power Reset

  1. With the printer ON, disconnect the power cord for 60 seconds.
  2. Reconnect and turn it back on to reset the ink system.

6. Last Resort: Service or Printhead Replacement

If cyan still doesn’t print correctly after all these steps, the printhead may be clogged or failing. At 7 years old and out of warranty, your best option is a service center or considering a new printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
