Dear HP Support,

I recently cancelled my HP Instant Ink subscription and subsequently received another shipment of cartridges, giving me a total of 2 color and 2 black cartridges. However, my printer is currently not allowing me to print and displays the message: “You are not enrolled in an HP ink program.”

I would like to ensure that my printer is fully operational without requiring enrollment in any subscription program. Please confirm whether it is possible to use my printer independently of HP Instant Ink.

Additionally, I request that HP formally detach itself from my personal printer and release any connection or oversight that may exist over my printing rights.

Before proceeding, I intend to return the 2 black and 2 color cartridges from the recent shipment. Could you please advise on the location or status of my original cartridges so I can replace them appropriately when returning the current ones?

I appreciate your prompt guidance and assistance in this matter.

Sincerely,

Hi @Ashwanib54,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you cancelled your HP Instant Ink subscription, received additional cartridges afterward, and your printer is now showing a message that it is not enrolled and will not print. Let’s go through a few points to clarify how this works and what you can do next.

Understand Instant Ink cartridge behavior
HP Instant Ink cartridges are subscription-based and stop working once the subscription is cancelled.
Even unused Instant Ink cartridges cannot be used without an active subscription.

Confirm use of standard (non-Instant Ink) cartridges
To print without any subscription, the printer must use standard HP ink cartridges, not Instant Ink ones.
The message you’re seeing indicates Instant Ink cartridges are still installed.

Locate your original cartridges
The original cartridges that came with the printer are standard cartridges and are not tracked or stored by HP.
If they were removed earlier, they would need to be reinstalled if still available.

Replace Instant Ink cartridges
Remove all Instant Ink cartridges currently installed in the printer.
Install standard HP cartridges that match your printer model.

Power reset after cartridge replacement
Turn the printer off, unplug it for 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
This allows the printer to reinitialize with the new cartridges.

Check printer status after replacement
Once standard cartridges are installed, the printer should return to a Ready state.
The “not enrolled in an HP ink program” message should no longer block printing.

Returning Instant Ink cartridges
Instant Ink cartridges are typically returned using the prepaid return method provided by HP.
They should not be used or stored as backups, since they will remain inactive.

Printer operation without HP Instant Ink
Your printer can function fully without HP Instant Ink using standard cartridges only.
No HP account, subscription, or enrollment is required for normal printing once Instant Ink cartridges are removed.

I hope this helps.
