Is there someway I can just print in black w/o replacing a depleted color cartridge?

No on that printer model. If any colour ink cartridge is empty missing or depleted the printer will stop working ( printing).

+The responses that suggest that if ANY cartridge is depleted (the printer will not print) may be misleading.

+My 8710 has the same issue, but I noticed HP will run with the black cartridge depleted.  It asks if you want to use the color cartridges to print black.  

+HP is more than happy to exhaust the color cartridges, so they can sell you more.

+Visual inspection shows that the print heads are the same.

+I'd love to hear the technical reason behind this extorsion...anyone😁
