HP Recommended

I'm trying to replace the black ink cartridge on my Deskjet F2280 printer. The new HP brand cartridge has prompted an E error message, and says the new cartridge is faulty or incompatible. The old ink cartridge, though low on ink, doesn't prompt the same warning when reinserted. How likely is it that a new ink cartridge is faulty or could it be a change in software? Should I reinstall software? and if so, how do I do that?
