Deskjet HP4580 driver version 3.3.2
System: MacOS High Sierra 10.13.6
Connection: via USB cable
I replaced my black ink and now can't print at all, the cartridge is ok as it works in another printer
The paper feed is working and I believe the printer is in 'error mode' which needs to be cleared.
- Printer displays: Attention light and the Colour Ink Level light blink fast, and an E displays
- Print system window displays: 'The following cartridges have a problem. Black. Refer to printer documentation.'
- Utility displays: 'Device Status: Pen failure' & 'Supplies: Cartridge has failed, Black ink'
- Print test page [does not print or feed paper], display: 'Printer is in error state' & 'Please resolve the error condition for the device and try again'.
I have tried the following:
- Printer won't print in either colour, black or grayscale since I replaced the cartridge.
- Cleaned contact strips on cartridges as per HP instructions
- Disconnect all cables and reboot [twice]
- Shut down and rebooted Mac
- Remove printer and re-install.
- Clean Print heads etc.
Which has brought me to final conclusion ie 'Error Mode' needs to be cleared?
Does anyone know how to do this? I have spent hours trying to solve this problem and would be so grateful for your help.
Many thanks

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help.
Let's try to reset the Printer here:
- Reset the product
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
- Wait at least 60 seconds.
- Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
- Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
- Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.
- Also, try connecting the Printer to a different wall outlet directly.
Let me know if this helps.
