The HP representative response that I read in the Community Chats was that the reason for HP blocking the consumer option to DISABLE PRINTER CARTRIDGE PROTECTION...for the purpose of allowing consumers to use ink that is far less expensive than the inflated price in play from HP.  The question I would pose to that HP representative & to the HP Business Plan operatives is: "What if the customer values the accessibility for less expensive printer cartridges over the risk of damaging the printer - especially older printers?"  I would guess that there might be more consumers like myself that would at least have the OPTION to determine risk.  I've been an HP consumer - in numerous product families - but, I have to venture away from HP printers moving forward, for this very reason.  Thanks in advance for your reply.TNT

As I'm scanning down below, it looks like this really should be posted elsewhere.  I'm still interested to read an HP response.  Thanks again, TNT

It seems to be impossible to turn off cartridge protection, but you should turn off any further firmware updates. Good third party cartridges should work with the most current firmware, but you will have to throw away any old ones that are no longer compatible. It's pretty reprehensible that HP would stoop this low.
