HP is holding my printer hostage. How do I disable the cartridge protected feature?

Hi @MYDOGKD

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Before we even think about possible directions, I’d like to understand your situation better so I can give you the most relevant guidance:

  • Which HP printer model are you using?
  • Are you seeing a specific error message or warning on the printer/app?
  • Did this issue start after you installed a new cartridge, or after a firmware update?
  • Are you using original HP cartridges or third-party/refilled ones?

Just to set expectations clearly: there are no official HP steps available to disable the cartridge protection feature

These details will help me tailor the explanation to your exact setup. Some models handle cartridge protection differently, and the context (new install vs. ongoing use) changes what options you realistically have.

Would you share a bit more about your printer and what exactly happens when you try to print?

We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!

Regards,

Hawks_Eye
