Hi @Jenny2101,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
You generally do not have to use HP Instant Ink cartridges, but there are a few things to keep in mind when using third-party or non-HP cartridges with your HP printer:
Using Non-HP Cartridges
Printer Compatibility: Ensure that the cartridges you purchased are compatible with your specific HP printer model. Check the printer’s manual or the HP website for a list of compatible cartridges.
Error Messages: If all the lights on your printer are flashing, it could indicate an issue with the cartridge installation or compatibility. Double-check that the cartridges are properly installed and that they match the specifications for your printer.
Firmware Updates: Sometimes, HP printers have firmware updates that can affect the compatibility of third-party cartridges. If your printer has recently been updated, it might not recognize non-HP cartridges.
Printer Settings: Some HP printers have settings or features that are designed to work specifically with HP Instant Ink cartridges. While you don’t need to use these cartridges, make sure any settings related to ink or cartridges are appropriately adjusted for non-HP cartridges.
Troubleshooting Steps
Check Cartridge Installation:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it.
- Open the cartridge access door and carefully remove and reinsert the cartridges to ensure they are properly seated.
Clean the Cartridge Contacts:
- If there are any smudges or debris on the cartridge contacts or inside the printer, clean them gently with a lint-free cloth.
Reset the Printer:
- Perform a reset by turning off the printer, unplugging it, waiting a minute, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.
Consult the Printer’s Manual:
- Look up troubleshooting tips specific to your printer model in the manual.
HP Instant Ink Program
HP Instant Ink is a subscription service that provides ink cartridges and free shipping when your printer is running low. If you are enrolled in this program, it’s generally recommended to use HP Instant Ink cartridges to ensure uninterrupted service. However, if you are not enrolled in HP Instant Ink, you can use standard HP or compatible third-party cartridges, provided they are supported by your printer model.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
