I once again have ink cartridges that will not work because I upgraded my firmware. I want to downgrade my firmware so I can use my non-HP cartridges on my 8710. Everything I've tried so far does not work. The 8710 has been great over the years, but I am running out of patience with this ink situation.

Hi @nashvillewriter,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Downgrading firmware on a printer, such as the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710, can be a bit tricky and may not always be recommended. Firmware updates typically include bug fixes, security enhancements, and improved functionality. If you still want to proceed with the downgrade, here are the general steps you might follow.
- Find the Previous Firmware Version: You'll need to find the previous version of the firmware that you want to downgrade to. This might involve searching HP's official website or contacting their customer support.
- Prepare the Printer and Computer: Make sure your printer is connected to your computer and is turned on. Also, ensure that your computer has the necessary drivers and software to communicate with the printer.
- Download the Firmware: Download the firmware version you want to install. Make sure you're getting it from a reputable source, ideally directly from HP's official support website.
- Disable Automatic Updates: If the printer has automatic firmware updates enabled, you might need to disable this feature temporarily to prevent it from updating to the latest version again.
- Enter Firmware Update Mode: Depending on the printer model, you might need to enter a specific mode to initiate the firmware update process. This can often be done through the printer's settings menu.
- Install the Downgraded Firmware: Run the firmware update file you downloaded earlier. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the older firmware version.
- Wait and Restart: The update process might take a few minutes. Once it's done, the printer might restart automatically. If it doesn't, you might need to restart it manually.
- Test the Printer: After the downgrade, test the printer to ensure that it's functioning properly with the older firmware version.
Remember that downgrading firmware can have its own risks. It might introduce compatibility issues, potential security vulnerabilities, or even cause the printer to malfunction.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
