I am trying to figure out how I can empty the ink on my printer and put new ink in. I have the HP smart tank 5000.

Hi @Ashley72895 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the HP Smart Tank 5000 series uses a continuous ink supply system with refillable ink tanks, making the process of replacing ink slightly different than traditional cartridge-based printers. Here's how you can safely empty the ink tanks and refill them:

Steps to Empty and Refill Ink Tanks in the HP Smart Tank 5000 Series

1. Gather Supplies

  • New HP ink bottles compatible with your printer.
  • A syringe or similar tool for removing leftover ink (if needed, for emptying the tank completely).
  • Gloves and paper towels to handle spills.

2. Prepare the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it to avoid any electrical hazards.
  • Place the printer on a surface covered with paper towels or a disposable mat to catch any spills.

3. Empty the Ink Tanks

  • Locate the ink tanks: These are on the front or side of the printer.
  • Open the ink tank lids one by one.
  • Use a syringe or similar tool to carefully extract the ink from each tank.
    • Dispose of the ink responsibly according to your local regulations.

4. Clean the Tanks (Optional)

  • If switching to a different type of ink or if the tanks need cleaning, you can rinse them with distilled water. Ensure they are completely dry before refilling to avoid diluting the new ink.

5. Refill the Ink Tanks

  • Open the new ink bottles.
  • Align the nozzle of the bottle with the corresponding tank’s filling port.
  • Gently squeeze the bottle to fill the tank until it reaches the maximum line. Avoid overfilling.
  • Repeat this process for all colors.

6. Seal and Close the Tanks

  • Close the lids of the ink tanks securely.
  • Ensure there are no spills; clean any residue with a paper towel.

7. Test the Printer

  • Plug in and turn on the printer.
  • Run a test print or a nozzle check from the printer’s maintenance menu to confirm the ink is flowing correctly.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always use genuine HP ink to maintain print quality and avoid damage to the printhead.
  • Keep the ink tank caps sealed when not refilling to prevent contamination.
  • If you are storing ink, keep the bottles in a cool, dry place.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
