I ended my subscription with Instant Ink.  Bought a new HP black ink cartridge from Amazon but printer will not print.  What else has to be done?

Hi @comanja

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When transitioning from an Instant Ink subscription, there are a few steps to ensure your printer recognizes the new cartridge. Here's what you can try:

1. Verify Cartridge Compatibility

  • Ensure the cartridge you purchased is compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 6968.

2. Disable Cartridge Protection

  • Instant Ink cartridges are subscription-specific and won't work after the subscription ends. To ensure your printer accepts standard cartridges:
    • Open the HP Smart app or access the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).
    • Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Cartridge Protection and disable it.
    • Save the changes and restart your printer.

3. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for 2 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Reinsert the new cartridge and check if the issue is resolved.

Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.
  • Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware of your printer.

5. Clean the Printhead

  • On the printer's control panel, swipe down to open the Dashboard.
  • Select Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Your suggestion to get my printer to run on a new, non-Instant Ink cartridge, didn't fix the problem.  HP Smart Web Services didn't list the steps you showed, although I did find out about disabling Instant Ink.

I did everything listed, but I still cannot print with a new Black 902.  That Instant Ink program has stolen my computer.  I cannot recommend that ink deal to anyone.  It may work better for a newer HP printer, but not my 6968.

Thanks for the come-back.

Looks like I'm getting nowhere.  Your private message never arrived, unless the last message I received was it.  If it was, it didn't look any different than the first supposed cure you sent..  I have now bought new color cartridges, which bugs me, as they are the same as the ones I had used before I tried Instant Ink.  Still don't know why my printer would not print with just a black cartridge installed.  It works now with all new cartridges, but I will definitely tell anyone considering Instant Ink about what will happen to their printer.
