Hi @Joanne-K_84
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with two issues on your HP Envy 4520 printer: it’s not printing color, and it’s also not automatically duplexing. The fact that reinstalling the software worked temporarily suggests there may be a problem with the settings, drivers, or the printhead. Let's go through a few troubleshooting steps to address both issues:
1. Check the Printer Ink Cartridges
If the printer isn’t printing in color, the first thing to check is the ink cartridges:
Check Ink Levels: Make sure that the color ink cartridges (cyan, magenta, and yellow) aren’t empty or low. You can check the ink levels from the printer’s control panel or in the HP Smart App.
Reinstall the Cartridges: Sometimes, the cartridges can become misaligned. Turn off the printer, remove the ink cartridges, and then carefully reinstall them to ensure they are seated correctly.
Clean the Cartridges and Printhead: If the ink cartridges are full but the printer is still not printing color, the printhead may be clogged. You can clean the printhead from the printer's control panel:
- Go to Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead (or similar option, depending on the printer model).
- You can also run the printer diagnostics tool through the HP Smart App to check for any issues with the printhead.
Check for Any Physical Blockages: Ensure there are no paper jams or obstructions in the paper path, especially near the printhead area.
2. Check Printer Settings
Make sure the color printing setting is enabled and that it isn’t stuck in grayscale or black-and-white mode.
On Windows:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click on your HP Envy 4520 and select Print Queue.
- Click on Printer in the top menu and uncheck Use Printer Offline if it’s selected.
- Select Printing Preferences and check the color settings. Ensure that Color is selected rather than Black & White or Grayscale.
3. Set the Print Quality to Color
Another common reason the printer won’t print in color is if the print quality is set to draft or black-and-white. You can adjust this in the print settings.
On Windows:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click the HP Envy 4520 printer and select Printer Preferences.
- Under the Color tab, ensure that Color is selected instead of Black & White..
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
